Time flew by in a wink. It has been about 5 years since I made my first foray professionally into the special educational needs world. Honestly, the skills of analysis, problem solving and creativity are trans-disciplinary. They are useful in both the world of science and education.

It has been a fruitful journey - God is good! The training was not the hardest for I have always enjoyed learning new things. Thankful for the learning opportunities to equip myself - in special education, dyslexia studies and even psycho-social aspects (counselling). Also tried a variety of other things like parent / teacher / student training, running inclusion awareness week, etc (off the top of my head). All of these training and experiences were important to become an effective learning support specialist.

Grateful for the school that I was posted to and the opportunities to take up a leadership position in learning support. It is a dream fulfilled to be able to see the implementation of a structured system of special educational needs support! Systems are intended to serve and respond swiftly to needs (not the other way). Proud of this - provided customised support with integrity while holding fast to the 'substance of the rule' instead of a blind and rigid adherence to the books - and most of all, in a mainstream school. :)

The top item that I enjoyed most was working with the students; and experiencing the presence of God in my work. Some had really challenging behaviours - ADHD, Autism, language issues, undiagnosed mental health conditions - it was gratifying to see the unseen hand of divine intervention through the supports that were provided. I don't completely understand what it means yet, to "go out quickly" and "go out and compel them to come". I hope the Lord will be praised for the good works done.

Blessed by the encouragement notes and drawings from students, parents and colleagues. Invaluable!
Sitting in the Learning Room

As I am wrapping up this leg of my journey in the secondary school, I am filled with peace and gratitude for the experiences, lessons and growth. The background of the photo is a collection of notes and drawings from the students (invaluable!); thank you notes from parents and colleagues.

I am excited and prayerful for the next lap in higher education (start in Aug!) and what the Lord would have me do. Sometimes the thoughts of working overseas pop up, maybe settling down... There are a million possibilities but the one important reality is about waiting well before Him. The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. We'll see what opportunities comes up!

It is also timely that I update this website to record my journey. It was dormant for a while and for a variety of reasons.. haha.. and to take up this challenge of laying down a 'digital footprint'. This was a response to the topic I am currently learning in the master course. How do we prepare young people (including those with SEN) for the future? Digital literacy is an important area and so I too must continue to deepen my learning in this area. :) Okay! I'm done for now. Until my next reflection point - 加油, D!
