Positive Teacher Student Relationship (TSR) is characterised by a lack of conflict, closeness with student, support and a lack of dependency*.

The benefits of such attachment include improving students’ engagement, social and academic functioning; and even mitigate poor parent-child attachment problems*. In other words, positive TSR can be considered an intervention in itself.

How to build good TSR?

Skillful teachers are able to ‘unlock’ the potential of their students through the positive teacher-student relationships (TSR) they build with students.

Some strategies to try:

  • Provide structure

  • Teach with passion

  • Have a positive attitude

  • Inject humour into lessons

  • Use students’ interests

  • Show an interest in their lives outside school

  • Treat them with respect

  • Go the extra mile
