Do you have the Growth Mindset?
There are no right or wrong answers. Answer ‘True’ or ‘False’ to the following:
I believe intelligence can be grown.
I have a desire to learn.
I embrace challenges.
I persist in the face of setbacks.
I see effort as the pathway to mastery.
I learn from criticism.
I learn and draw inspiration in the success of others.
If you answered mostly true, you have a growth mindset. The 7 statements are a summary of the Growth Mindset by Carol Dweck (https://fs.blog/2015/03/carol-dweck-mindset/).

Changing our mindset involves changing our internal ‘script’ to reflect and nurture the Growth Mindset. What does your script sound like?
The Power of ‘Yet’
Sometimes we hear students say, “I cannot do this.” or “This is too hard. I cannot master it.”
The way we word things or our ‘script’ can make a lot of difference to our- selves and students. A 3-letter word that can inspire them to persevere after setbacks – welcome to the Power of ‘Yet’.
“I cannot do this yet.”
“This is too hard. I cannot master it yet.”
Yet conveys our belief that intelligence can be grown. Mastery is achieved through effort. We may not be there at this time but we will get there at some point.
The next time you hear your students using a negative script of themselves . Teach them the power of yet. The first step to changing mindset is to change their script. Try it with your students!
Growth Mindset in the classroom
We need to inculcate 4 important beliefs:
I belong in this academic community.
My ability and competence grow with my effort.
I can succeed at this.
This work has value for me.
The teacher’s mindset affects student’s mindset by:
1) affecting how they support their students and
2) mediating how students perceive their teacher’s mindset. Students’ belief about what their teacher thinks about them impacts their mindset and motivation. Check out the info: https://www.mindsetworks.com/websitemedia/info/academic_mindsets.pdf
